Twelve Indian nationals were killed in a devastating explosion at a gas processing facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, one of the deadliest accidents in the global gas industry in more than two decades.
Confirming the casualties, the Embassy of India in Doha said Qatari authorities had informed it that 12 Indian nationals lost their lives in the incident, which occurred on Sunday night. The embassy expressed condolences to the bereaved families and said efforts were underway to assist those affected.
In a post on X, the embassy said all injured persons were in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical treatment. It added that officials were working closely with Qatari authorities to provide all possible assistance to Indian nationals and their families, including facilitating the early repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries, including of Indian nationals, in the explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City,” Jaishankar said in a post on X. He noted that the Indian Embassy in Doha remained in contact with Qatari authorities and was reaching out to provide assistance to the families affected by the incident. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” he added.
According to Qatar’s Energy Minister, the explosion occurred at a gas processing facility within the sprawling Ras Laffan industrial complex, a key hub of the country’s energy sector. The incident is being described as one of the most serious accidents to hit the gas industry in recent years.
