The aftermath of heavy rainfall and floods in Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province has left nearly 70 schools and madrassas severely affected. However, the lack of sufficient funds is impeding efforts to restore these vital educational institutions.
Shamsullah Kamran, the head of Education in Uruzgan, expressed deep concern over the situation. He noted the dire financial constraints faced by the Uruzgan Education Department, hindering their ability to undertake the necessary rebuilding work.
“The relentless rains and floods have left approximately seventy schools either fully or partially destroyed. Without urgent assistance from organizations, we anticipate significant challenges ahead.”, Kamran said.
The impact of this disaster is acutely felt by teachers and students across the province. Many students from the damaged schools are now forced to make do with makeshift learning spaces in open areas or private residences.
Sirajuddin Sirajmal, a teacher, highlighted the harsh reality faced by students, remarking, “Our students are struggling without proper learning environments,” as reported by TOLOnews.
Javed, a student, expressed frustration, saying, “We are exposed to the elements, with little support, and often find ourselves without teachers, forcing us to return home.”
Another student echoed the urgent need for action, urging authorities to prioritize the rebuilding of schools. “We urge the government and relief agencies to act swiftly in restoring our schools so that we can resume our education,” the student emphasized.
Local residents of Uruzgan are also deeply concerned about the long-term impact on their children’s education. They are calling on government authorities and relief organizations to expedite the reconstruction of these vital educational facilities to prevent a prolonged educational crisis in the region.
