Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the procurement of 1,25,855 metric tonnes of crops at Minimum Support Price (MSP) in Telangana for the Rabi 2026 season, a move expected to benefit thousands of farmers in the state.
The procurement, to be carried out under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), has a total approved value of over ₹894 crore, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Procurement of pulses and oilseeds
As per the approval granted by the government, the procurement will include multiple crops cultivated by farmers during the Rabi season. These include 29,860 MT of gram; 37,020 MT of urad; 55,285 MT of groundnut; and 3,690 MT of sunflower.
The decision was taken following a proposal submitted by the Telangana government seeking MSP procurement support.
Protecting farmers from market fluctuations
Chouhan said the Centre aims to protect farmers from fluctuations in market prices and ensure that they receive fair remuneration for their produce.
He noted that the approval would not only guarantee remunerative prices for farmers in Telangana but also encourage the production of pulses and oilseeds, which are crucial for improving the country’s nutritional security and reducing import dependence.
Relief from distress selling
The Union Minister said the decision would provide economic security to farmers by preventing distress sales at low market prices.
He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre is working to increase farmers’ incomes, strengthen the agriculture sector and boost the rural economy.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, the MSP procurement will directly benefit farmers cultivating gram, urad, groundnut and sunflower in Telangana and is expected to support stability and growth in the state’s agricultural sector.
