Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to develop a data-intensive platform to assist investigation officers and enhance the functioning of the criminal justice system. The directive came during a review meeting in New Delhi on the implementation of three new criminal laws and integration of advanced technological systems.
The meeting focused on integrating the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS 2.0), National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), and other components like prisons, courts, prosecution, and forensic systems into the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS 2.0) on a national scale. Senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, NCRB, and NIC attended the session alongside Union Home Secretary.
Shah emphasized the importance of technology-driven reforms and instructed NCRB to ensure the full implementation of new criminal laws within the ICJS 2.0 framework. He highlighted the need to adopt applications such as eSakshya, Nyaya Shruti, eSign, and eSummons across all states and Union Territories to improve efficiency and transparency in criminal investigations and judicial processes.
The Home Minister also proposed generating automated alerts at predefined stages of criminal cases, from registration to final disposal, to benefit victims and complainants. “These alerts will assist investigation officers and senior officials in expediting cases within stipulated timelines,” Shah said.
To promote the adoption of these technological projects, Shah suggested forming teams from the Ministry of Home Affairs and NCRB to visit states and Union Territories, providing technical support and encouraging implementation. He also recommended regular interactions with senior police officials to monitor the progress of CCTNS and ICJS projects.
Additionally, Shah stressed the use of biometric technology to identify unidentified dead bodies and missing persons, a move aimed at strengthening investigative efficiency and victim support. He praised NCRB’s efforts in the technical implementation of new criminal laws and initiatives like NAFIS.
