Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday lauded the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for its unwavering dedication and sacrifices, stating that India’s internal security cannot be imagined without the force. He was addressing the 87th Raising Day celebrations of the Central Reserve Police Force in Guwahati, Assam.
The event, held in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and senior CRPF officials, marked the first time in the force’s 86-year history that the Raising Day parade was organised in the Northeast.
In his address, Shah said that since its inception in 1939 with just two battalions, the CRPF has grown into the world’s largest Central Armed Police Force with 248 battalions and over 3.25 lakh personnel. He paid tribute to the 2,270 CRPF personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty, calling their sacrifices the foundation of the nation’s internal security framework.
Shah noted that around a decade ago, Jammu and Kashmir, Left-Wing Extremism-affected regions and the Northeast were considered major internal security hotspots. He said that due to the sustained efforts of security forces, particularly the CRPF, these areas have witnessed significant improvement and are now progressing on the path of development.
The Home Minister highlighted the force’s role in key operations, including countering attacks on Parliament and the Ram Janmabhoomi complex, as well as ensuring security during major religious events such as the Amarnath Yatra and the Mahakumbh. He also recalled the bravery displayed by CRPF personnel during the 1965 Rann of Kutch operations, commemorated annually as Shaurya Diwas on April 9.
Referring to developments in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370, Shah said that peace and stability had been maintained without the need for firing a single bullet, with CRPF playing a significant role. He added that incidents of stone-pelting have ceased and development activities have gained momentum in the region.
On the fight against Left-Wing Extremism, Shah said Naxalism, which once affected 12 states, is now on the verge of elimination. He expressed confidence that the country would be free from Naxalism before March 31, 2026. He praised CRPF and its elite CoBRA units for their role in Operation Black Forest, during which personnel operated for 21 days in extreme conditions to dismantle Naxalite strongholds.
Describing the decision to hold CAPF parades across different parts of the country as a significant step by the Narendra Modi government, Shah said hosting the CRPF parade in the Northeast for the first time was a matter of pride for the region.
Shah concluded by reiterating that the CRPF continues to stand as a strong pillar of India’s internal security and sovereignty, safeguarding the nation across diverse and challenging terrains.
The ceremony also saw gallantry and distinguished service medals being awarded to CRPF personnel and battalions for their outstanding contributions.
