Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday paid tribute to freedom fighter Rani Avantibai Lodhi on her martyrdom day, hailing her as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism.
In a post on X, HM Shah said that Rani Avantibai Lodhi’s life remains an unparalleled example of bravery and dedication to the nation. He highlighted her role in the Revolt of 1857, where she fought valiantly against British forces and chose martyrdom over surrender.
“Her sacrifice conveys an eternal message of dedication and self-respect towards the nation. Humble tributes to her on her martyrdom day,” HM Shah said.
The Home Minister further noted that she demonstrated exceptional leadership during the 1857 uprising by mobilising local youth and liberating several regions from British control. He added that her courage and resolve continue to inspire generations of Indians.
Rani Avantibai Lodhi, a prominent leader of India’s first war of independence, was born on August 16, 1831, in Mankehni village in present-day Madhya Pradesh. Known for her skills in swordsmanship and horse riding from a young age, she later assumed administrative control of the Ramgarh state due to her husband’s ill health.
Her resistance intensified after the British sought to annex the state under the Doctrine of Lapse. She expelled British-appointed officials, took charge of governance, and encouraged farmers to resist colonial authority.
During the uprising, she rallied support from neighbouring rulers and led her forces in the Battle of Kheri in 1857, where British troops were defeated. However, in March 1858, as British forces mounted a strong offensive, she chose to sacrifice her life on the battlefield rather than be captured.
Rani Avantibai Lodhi’s legacy endures as a powerful symbol of valour, leadership, and unwavering commitment to India’s freedom struggle.
