‘An Indian prevented 9/11 like tragedy’: PM Modi lauds Captain Smit Machchhar who saved lives on flydubai flight

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised Indian Captain Smit Machchhar’s bravery for foiling his co-pilot’s alleged attempt to crash a flydubai flight to Israel and said that his courageous act fills every Indian’s heart with pride.

Addressing an event in New Delhi, he said Captain Machchhar has showed great patience, acumen and bravery.

“And like Israeli PM (Benjamin Netanyahu) today said that this Indian thwarted 9/11 (like attack). For every Indian, Smit’s bravery fills our heart with pride,” PM Modi said, addressing the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

He said the whole world is feeling proud of him.

“I request all citizens to pray for Smit’s longlife, excellent health. And we also praise him for adding to India’s pride,” the Prime Minister said.

Earlier today, PM Modi said in a post on X, “Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO. In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy.”

“India is proud of Captain Machchhar. Praying for his speedy recovery, renewed strength and good health,” the Prime Minister added.

The flydubai flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, had transmitted emergency signals and made a sharp descent before diverting to Prince Sultan Bin Abdel Aziz Airport in Tabuk.

The flight was carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children.
