AQI in Delhi drops to 226; residents face breathing issues

A thin layer of smog has blanketed the national capital on Saturday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to 226, classified as ‘Poor’ by the Central Pollution Control Board. The worst readings were recorded in the Akshardham and Anand Vihar areas, where the AQI reached 334, categorized as ‘Very Poor’. AIIMS and nearby areas reported an AQI of 253, while India Gate saw levels drop to 251, also marked as ‘Poor’.

Local resident Ashish Kumar Meena expressed concerns about the rising pollution near Akshardham, stating, “The pollution levels here have surged significantly over the past two days, causing throat irritation, breathing difficulties, and eye discomfort. After Diwali, we expect even worse conditions. The government must take action, including imposing fines on those burning materials that contribute to this issue. Those with respiratory problems are suffering the most.”

Another resident suggested increased public transport usage to help mitigate pollution, saying, “More people should rely on public transport and consider carpooling to reduce pollution in the city.”

On October 18, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla staged a protest at the ‘Smog Tower’, criticizing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of failing to deliver on promises to combat air pollution. “Delhi has become a gas chamber due to the blame game from the AAP. They made grand promises to eradicate pollution, yet the Yamuna’s condition and Delhi’s air quality speak otherwise. Despite banning firecrackers for Diwali, the smog tower, which cost Rs 23 crore, remains unused. The AAP’s failure to tackle pollution effectively will be revealed,” Poonawalla stated.
