Army hospital performs India’s first LVAD implantation with HeartMate 3 device in a government institution

The Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in Delhi has made history by performing India’s first Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation using the HeartMate 3 device in a government institution.

This breakthrough marks a significant achievement for the Armed Forces Medical Services, setting a new benchmark in advanced cardiac care.

The life-saving procedure was performed on a 49-year-old woman, the wife of an Armed Forces veteran, who had been awaiting a heart transplant for over two years. The HeartMate 3 LVAD, often referred to as a “mechanical heart,” serves as a vital bridge for patients with end-stage heart failure, offering a lifeline to those in critical need.

The HeartMate 3 is a state-of-the-art device utilizing advanced technology to support and improve heart function in patients with severe cardiac conditions. The patient is currently recovering steadily under close medical supervision, underscoring the success of this complex and collaborative medical effort.
