Bangladesh receives egg shipment from India as prices soar in local markets

In response to rising egg prices, another shipment of 2.31 lakh eggs from India arrived in Bangladesh via the Benapole land port on Saturday night. The surge in egg prices has placed a heavy burden on low- and middle-income households, forcing many to reduce their consumption as prices hit 200 taka per dozen in Dhaka and other parts of the country over the past week.

To combat this price hike, the Bangladesh government has authorized the phased import of 4.5 crore eggs. According to reports by the United News of Bangladesh (UNB), an additional shipment of 90 lakh eggs is expected from India by November.

In a separate development, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) announced a significant reduction in import duty on eggs, slashing the rate from 25 percent to 5 percent. This move, implemented on Thursday, aims to lower the import cost of eggs by 13.8 taka per dozen, making the essential protein source more affordable for the general population. The NBR emphasized that the duty cut is part of the government’s efforts to ease the pressure on consumers and stabilize the market.
