The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan with a total outlay of Rs. 79,156 crore, aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities.
This initiative will focus on saturating tribal-majority villages and aspirational districts, covering approximately 63,000 villages and benefitting more than five crore tribal people across 30 states and union territories.
Key interventions of the program include housing, health, education, and livelihood opportunities for tribal households, with implementation through 17-line ministries over the next five years.
The mission focuses on four major goals: developing infrastructure, promoting economic empowerment, universalizing access to education, and improving health outcomes. Under this scheme, tribal households will gain access to pucca housing, water, electricity, skill development programs, and healthcare facilities, among other benefits.
Additionally, it envisions promoting tribal tourism with the construction of homestays and boosting income through initiatives for forest right holders and agricultural activities.
The central government will also invest in improving tribal residential schools, setting up centers for the diagnosis of sickle cell disease, and establishing 100 Tribal Multipurpose Marketing Centres to enhance the marketing of tribal products.
Building on the success of the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan, the mission represents a coordinated effort to ensure sustainable and holistic development for tribal areas across India.
