Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Mumbai on Friday on a four-day official visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his first official trip to the country and a significant step in efforts to normalise bilateral ties, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.
According to the MEA, over the next two days in Mumbai, Carney will participate in business engagements and interact with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry leaders, financial experts, innovators, educators, and representatives of Canadian pension funds operating in India.
Carney is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on March 1. On March 2, he will hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House.
The two leaders are expected to review progress under the India–Canada Strategic Partnership, building on their earlier meetings in Kananaskis in June 2025 and Johannesburg in November 2025. The discussions will cover key areas including trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation, and people-to-people ties. They will also exchange views on regional and global developments, the MEA said.
Prime Minister Modi and Carney will also attend the India–Canada CEOs Forum scheduled later in the day, the MEA added.
The visit comes at an important juncture in normalisation of India-Canada bilateral relations. The two Prime Ministers have earlier agreed to pursue a constructive and balanced partnership grounded in mutual respect for each other’s concerns and sensitivities, strong people-to-people ties, and growing economic complementarities. The forthcoming meeting between the leaders will provide an opportunity to reaffirm the positive momentum and shared vision of India and Canada in building a forward-looking partnership, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
