The Union government has approved a ₹472 crore project to construct a Road Over Bridge (ROB) along with associated infrastructure at Tuna-Tekra, in a move aimed at strengthening port connectivity and improving cargo evacuation.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the project will play a key role in enhancing logistics efficiency and supporting India’s growing maritime sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The project includes the construction of viaducts, a bridge over a creek, and allied infrastructure, along with a 10-year maintenance provision to ensure long-term durability and operational efficiency.
Strategic boost to port infrastructure
The proposed ROB is designed to serve as a critical connectivity link for the upcoming Tuna-Tekra port facilities, including a Mega Container Terminal with a capacity of 2.19 million TEUs and a multipurpose cargo berth capable of handling 18.33 million metric tonnes per annum.
Once completed, the infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce logistics turnaround time, ease congestion, and improve the overall efficiency of cargo movement in the region.
Synchronised development
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) said the project will be executed in tandem with the development of the Tuna-Tekra Container Terminal, which has already achieved around 45 per cent physical progress. This synchronised approach is expected to ensure that connectivity infrastructure is ready alongside port operations.
Focus on seamless cargo movement
The ROB will act as a primary transport artery, helping eliminate rail-road bottlenecks and facilitating the smooth movement of heavy-duty vehicles to and from the port.
The proposal had earlier been appraised by the Delegated Investment Board under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
The project is aligned with the government’s long-term maritime development strategies, including Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aim to position India as a global maritime hub.
