Chembur shop fire death toll increases to seven, including two children

At least seven people, including two children from the same family, were killed in a fire tragedy at a shop in Mumbai’s Chembur on Sunday.

The fire broke out on the ground floor of a multi-storey building at 5:20 a.m. in Plot No. 16/1, Sidharth Colony, KN Gaikwad Marg, Chembur (E), claiming the lives of seven members of the Gupta family. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, “Seven people, including three children, died after a fire broke out at a shop in Chembur around 5 a.m. today.”

All seven victims were identified as Presi Prem Gupta (6), Manju Prem Gupta (30), Anita Dharamdev Gupta (39), Prem Chediram Gupta (30), Narendra Gupta (10), Vidhi Chediram Gupta (15), and Gita Devi Dharamdev Gupta (60). According to Hemraj Singh Rajput, DCP of Zone 6, the family resided on the upper two floors of the G+2 building, while the shop was located on the ground floor.

“We received a call around 6 a.m. about the fire in the G+2 building. The ground floor housed a shop, and families lived on the upper two floors. Seven people died, and two individuals who were sleeping in the shop managed to escape. Our team and the fire brigade will investigate the exact cause of the fire,” said Rajput.

The fire was reported to have started due to a short circuit near the electrical wiring installed on the ground floor shop. Upon receiving information, rescue teams rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames.
