China’s foreign ministry rejects German espionage as ‘hype’

China’s foreign ministry on Monday (April 23) called for Germany to stop its ‘Cold War’ mentality after reports that Germany arrested a EU parliamentary staffer on espionage for China charges.

“The intention of this kind of hype is very obvious, that is, to discredit and suppress China and destroy the atmosphere of cooperation between China and Europe,” said foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, as he acknowledged the reports, during a regular briefing in Beijing.

Wang also called for Germany to stop engaging in “anti-China political manipulation”.

China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and it hopes the “relevant personnel” on the German side will abandon their Cold War mentality, ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a press conference.

Jian G., a staffer for the far-right Alternative for Germany’s top candidate in the European Parliament elections in June, Maximilian Krah, stands accused of giving the Chinese intelligence service information about negotiations and decisions in the European parliament, the prosecutors said in a statement.

The website of the AfD’s top candidate in the European Parliament elections, Maximilian Krah, lists Jian Guo as one of his assistants.
