Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in Kazan for BRICS summit

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Kazan on Tuesday to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit, hosted under Russia’s chairmanship. The summit’s theme, “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” underscores the importance of cooperation among Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to address global challenges.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders exchanged greetings warmly, with Putin embracing PM Modi and expressing the strength of their bond.

During their meeting, Putin lightheartedly said, “We have such a relationship that I felt you do not need any translation.” He thanked PM Modi for accepting the invitation to visit Kazan and emphasized the significance of the summit. “Today, we will participate in the opening ceremony of the BRICS Summit, followed by dinner. We are set to make some very important decisions with other leaders during the summit,” Putin said.

In response, PM Modi highlighted the close coordination and deep friendship between India and Russia. He said that his two visits to Russia within three months reflect the strong ties between the two nations.

“Our Annual Summit in Moscow in July strengthened cooperation across all fields. Over the past 15 years, BRICS has developed a distinct identity, and many countries are now eager to join it. I look forward to participating in the BRICS Summit tomorrow,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister Modi also reaffirmed India’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He emphasized the need for diplomacy, saying, “I have been in constant touch with you regarding the ongoing conflict. As I have said earlier, we believe that the problems should be resolved in a peaceful manner. We fully support the early establishment of peace and stability. All our efforts prioritize humanity, and India is ready to provide all possible cooperation in the times to come.”

This visit marks PM Modi’s second trip to Russia this year. He previously traveled to Moscow in July for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, where he held talks with President Putin. During that visit, PM Modi was conferred with Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, at the Kremlin.
