Congress had “anger, hate” towards Ambedkar, made all efforts for his defeat in elections: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Congress, accusing the party of harboring “anger and hatred” towards Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and claiming that the party made all efforts to defeat him in elections. He also alleged that Congress raised the slogan of ‘Jai Bhim’ out of political compulsion.

Replying to the motion of thanks on the President’s Address in the Rajya Sabha, PM Modi said Congress had a deep animosity towards Babasaheb Ambedkar and was responsible for obstructing his political career. He criticized the party for not conferring the Bharat Ratna on Ambedkar.

“It is well documented how much anger and hatred Congress had towards Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. They felt irritated by his words. Due to this anger, they did everything to defeat Babasaheb in the two elections (1952, 1954). They did not consider him worthy of the Bharat Ratna. Today, due to compulsions, they are forced to raise the slogan of ‘Jai Bhim’. Congress is an expert in changing its colors, and this is evident,” said PM Modi.

The Prime Minister further accused Congress of destabilizing elected governments during its tenure at the Centre. He claimed that rather than improving its own position, the party focused on impeding the progress of others.

“Congress destabilized governments because their motto remains, ‘Dusre ki lakeer chhoti karo’ (to limit others). This is why Congress’ condition is what it is today. The grand-old party, which was once connected to the freedom struggle, finds itself in this plight? If they had focused on improving themselves, they would have had an opportunity to sit on the ruling side in Parliament,” PM Modi added.

PM Modi also addressed concerns regarding the spread of “caste poison” in society and emphasized the BJP government’s achievements in addressing issues related to Other Backward Classes (OBC). He highlighted that while OBC MPs from all parties had long demanded constitutional status for the OBC Panel, Congress had rejected the demand. The Modi government, however, gave constitutional status to the panel, fulfilling the community’s long-standing demand.

The Rajya Sabha later adopted the motion of thanks to the President’s address.
