Constitution is a living, progressive document: President Murmu on ‘Samvidhan Diwas’

President Droupadi Murmu commemorated the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution by releasing a commemorative coin and stamp during the ‘Samvidhan Diwas’ celebrations at Samvidhan Sadan in Parliament on Tuesday.

Addressing the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on Constitution Day, President Murmu said that the Constitution is a living and progressive document.

“Our Constitution is a living and progressive document. Through our Constitution, we have achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development,” the President said.

Murmu also released three books on the Constitution to mark the occasion. The books, titled ‘Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse’, ‘Making of the Constitution of India & its Glorious Journey’* and a booklet dedicated to the art of the Constitution, were released by dignitaries from both Houses of Parliament.

The President also unveiled translated versions of the Constitution in Sanskrit and Maithili.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla congratulated the millions of Indians celebrating Constitution Day and emphasised that the Constitution is the result of years of penance, sacrifice, ingenuity, strength, and the ability of the people.

“I congratulate the millions of Indians celebrating Constitution Day today. Seventy-five years ago, on this day, our Constitution was codified. Under the leadership of the President, the entire country is united in expressing gratitude towards the Constitution today. Today, millions of countrymen will take a pledge to move the country forward by reciting the Preamble of the Constitution,” he said.

“Inspired by PM Modi, in 2015, we took the historic decision to celebrate 26th November as Constitution Day. Our Constitution is the result of years of penance, sacrifice, ingenuity, strength, and the ability of our people. In this central hall, after about three years of hard work, they created a Constitution that binds the geographical and social diversities of the country into one thread,” Birla added.

The event commemorates the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on 26th November 1949. The Constitution formally came into effect on 26th January 1950.
