Defence Ministry urges media to avoid live coverage of security operations

The Ministry of Defence on Friday issued an advisory urging media outlets to avoid live coverage of defence operations and the movement of security forces.

In a post on X, the Ministry said, “All media channels, digital platforms, and individuals are advised to refrain from live coverage or real-time reporting of defence operations and movement of security forces.”

The advisory warned that disclosing sensitive or source-based information could compromise operational effectiveness and endanger lives.

Citing past incidents such as the Kargil War, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking, the Ministry underlined the dangers of premature reporting during security operations.

It emphasized that, according to Clause 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, only periodic briefings by designated officials are permitted during anti-terror operations.

“All stakeholders are urged to exercise vigilance, sensitivity, and responsibility in their coverage, upholding the highest standards in the service of the nation,” the Ministry added.

The advisory also referenced an earlier note from the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting dated April 6, which had directed all media platforms to avoid live coverage of defence-related movements and operations. That advisory listed key cautionary points, reminding media outlets, news agencies, and social media users to adhere strictly to existing laws and act responsibly in matters concerning national security.

It clearly stated that no real-time coverage, dissemination of visuals, or source-based reporting related to defence operations should take place.

“Premature disclosure of sensitive information may inadvertently assist hostile elements and jeopardise operational effectiveness and the safety of personnel. Past events such as the Kargil War, the Mumbai attacks, and the Kandahar hijacking highlight the consequences of irresponsible reporting,” the note said.

The Ministry reiterated that media platforms and individuals play a vital role in safeguarding national interests. “Beyond legal compliance, it is a shared moral responsibility to ensure our collective actions do not compromise ongoing operations or the security of our forces,” the advisory noted.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has already directed all TV channels to comply with Rule 6(1)(p) of the Cable Television Networks (Amendment) Rules, 2021, which prohibits live coverage of anti-terror operations. Coverage must be limited to periodic briefings by designated government officers until such operations conclude.
