Dehradun: 200 students rescued from waterlogged institute after heavy rain

Disaster Response personnel on Tuesday rescued 200 students stranded at the Devbhoomi Institute campus in Paunda area of Dehradun after the premises were waterlogged following heavy overnight rains.

The downpour caused widespread damage to roads, houses, and public infrastructure across several parts of Uttarakhand.

Upon receiving information about the stranded students, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were immediately dispatched to the site.

“The team reached the spot and carried out a swift rescue operation. Despite severe waterlogging, the team worked with utmost caution and efficiency, evacuating all 200 students safely to a secure location,” the SDRF said in a statement.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an on-site inspection of the worst-affected areas, including Sahastradhara, Raipur, Kesarwala, and Maldevta in Dehradun district.

In Maldevta, Raipur, a 100-meter stretch of road was washed away due to the heavy flow of water triggered by torrential rains.

Speaking to reporters, Dhami said, “There has been extensive damage to houses and government property, and livelihoods have been affected. We are working to restore normalcy as quickly as possible. Connectivity has been disrupted at several places, and river levels are rising. All departments are working on a war footing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to me this morning, took detailed updates, and assured all possible support. Our priority is to provide immediate assistance to those affected by this disaster.”

In a post on X, the Chief Minister said that he is in constant touch with the local administration and is personally monitoring the situation.

Torrential rains caused the Sahastradhara river to overflow, with gushing waters carrying debris into the main market area, severely damaging shops and hotels along Sahastradhara Road. Several commercial establishments reported heavy losses.
