Delhi Police registers 504 cases for MCC violations, arrests 17,879 ahead of assembly polls

Delhi Police has registered 504 cases for violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) between January 7 and January 22. The 70-seat Delhi Assembly is set to go to polls in a single phase on February 5, with votes to be counted on February 8.

The police seized 270 unlicensed arms, 372 cartridges, and 44,256 litres of liquor valued at over ₹1.3 crore. Additionally, 110.53 kilograms of drugs and over 1,200 injections, estimated to be worth more than ₹20 crore, were confiscated. Authorities also recovered ₹4.56 crore in cash, 0.850 kilograms of gold, and 37.39 kilograms of silver.

From January 7 to January 19, 17,879 individuals were arrested by the Delhi Police under preventive measures and other legal provisions.

Police operations have focused on curbing illegal activities, including seizures of cash, illicit liquor, and firearms, as the Delhi Assembly elections approach. On January 20, an interstate gang of illegal firearm suppliers was apprehended by the Special Staff team of the North District Police. The operation led to the recovery of five semi-automatic pistols, six country-made pistols, and 28 live cartridges.

According to authorities, the accused were also linked to firearm supply in the Pragati Maidan Tunnel Robbery case of 2023. Among the three arrested, two had been involved in illegal firearm supply for two decades.

In a separate incident on January 19, police detained an individual for smuggling illicit liquor across the Haryana-Delhi border ahead of Republic Day and the assembly polls.

Law enforcement efforts continue as the elections draw nearer.
