Diwali shines bright at Times Square in early festivities

New York City’s Times Square came alive with vibrant Diwali celebrations over the weekend, as hundreds gathered to mark the festival of lights. The early festivities saw both the Indian community and Americans join together in a dazzling display of Indian culture, lighting up one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.

The event featured vibrant performances by various cultural groups, reflecting the diversity and heritage of India. A special Diwali fair added a festive atmosphere to the heart of New York City.

Leaders and dignitaries from across New York graced the event. Prominent attendees included City Mayor Eric Adams, New York State Assembly woman Jennifer Rajkumar, Senator Chuck Schumer and Binaya Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York who addressed the crowd and emphasized the significance of Diwali in promoting unity and cultural exchange.

Since 2013, Diwali at Times Square has been dedicated to promoting India’s rich culture, art and traditions. In a historic move last year, New York City officially recognised Diwali as a school holiday, marking a proud moment for the Indian-American community, which now numbers around 5 million.
