DRDO achieves success in Very Short-Range Air Defence System flight tests

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved a milestone with two successful flight tests of the Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile conducted on February 28 and 29. These tests were conducted from a ground-based portable launcher off the coast of Odisha, at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the tests involved engaging high-speed unmanned aerial targets in various interception scenarios. In each instance, the missiles intercepted and destroyed the targets, fulfilling the mission objectives.

The VSHORADS is a Man-Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) developed domestically by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian industry partners. The missile incorporates advanced technologies, including a miniaturized Reaction Control System (RCS) and integrated avionics, which have demonstrated their effectiveness during these tests.

Propelled by a dual-thrust solid motor, the VSHORADS missile is designed to neutralize low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges. Its design, including the launcher, has been optimized for easy portability.

The flight tests were witnessed by officials from the Indian Army, senior scientists from various DRDO laboratories, and industry partners.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army, and the involved industry for the successful development trials. He said that the new missile, equipped with modern technologies, will provide a significant technological boost to the armed forces.
