The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday announced the schedule for biennial elections to 28 Legislative Council seats across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The seats are from Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies, with Uttar Pradesh accounting for the highest number at 11.
According to the election schedule, notifications will be issued on September 29. The last date for filing nominations is October 6, while October 9 has been fixed as the deadline for withdrawal of candidature.
Polling for all 28 Legislative Council seats will be held on October 23 from 8 am to 4 pm. The counting of votes will take place on October 27.
In Uttar Pradesh, elections will be held for five Graduates’ and six Teachers’ constituencies, with the terms of the sitting members ending on December 6, 2026.
The retiring members are Awanish Kumar Singh (Lucknow Division-Graduates’), Ashutosh Sinha (Varanasi Division-Graduates’), Dr Manvendra Pratap Singh (Agra Division-Graduates’), Dinesh Kumar Goel (Meerut Division-Graduates’), Dr Man Singh Yadav (Allahabad-Jhansi Division-Graduates’), Umesh Dwivedi (Lucknow Division-Teachers’), Lal Biharee Yadav (Varanasi Division-Teachers’), Dr Akash Agrawal (Agra Division-Teachers’), Srichand Sharma (Meerut Division-Teachers’), Hari Singh Dhillon (Bareilly-Moradabad Division-Teachers’) and Dhruv Kumar Tripathi (Gorakhpur-Faizabad Division-Teachers’).
With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect in the concerned constituencies.
The ECI has also announced the schedule for Rajya Sabha elections involving 11 biennial vacancies in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, along with a separate bye-election for one seat in West Bengal. Polling for these contests is scheduled for October 16.
