ED raids residence of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at the residence of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and other locations in Kolkata on Wednesday. The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the institution.

The ED has registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Dr. Ghosh, who is currently in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI arrested Dr. Ghosh on September 2 following a directive from the Calcutta High Court to investigate corruption allegations and the brutal death and rape of trainee doctor

Dr. Ghosh filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court’s decision to order a CBI probe. The plea is scheduled to be heard on September 6 by a bench led by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

The corruption case has led to multiple actions against Dr. Ghosh. On Tuesday, he was remanded to 8-day police custody.

Ghosh came under investigation following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the premises of the hospital.

The CBI has also arrested two vendors of hospital supplies and a close associate of Ghosh in connection with the case. On August 24, acting on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI officially registered an FIR against Ghosh.

In response to the allegations, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Kolkata suspended Ghosh’s membership last week. The Calcutta High Court has directed the CBI to submit a progress report on the investigation by September 17.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered that the security of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) while hearing the suo motu case related to the incident.
