Election Commission ramps up voter awareness drive in poll-bound states, mega SVEEP event held in Howrah

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intensified its voter awareness campaigns across poll-bound states, with a major outreach event organised in Howrah under the theme “Chunav Ka Parv, Paschim Bengal Ka Garv” ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

As part of its Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, the ECI, in coordination with Chief Electoral Officers and District Election Officers, has rolled out state-wide initiatives in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu to promote greater participation in the democratic process in a free, fair and festive environment.

In Howrah, the event began with a cyclothon that saw enthusiastic participation from students, first-time voters and officials. The rally was flagged off from the Howrah Bridge Check Post and passed through key landmarks before concluding at Ramkrishnapur Ferry Ghat. Cultural programmes followed, using folk songs, dance and drama to highlight the importance of voting. A voter awareness boat ferry was also launched as part of the outreach.

Adding to the appeal, popular animated characters Chhota Bheem and Chutki engaged with young participants to spread awareness about voting. The initiative is aimed at educating citizens on key aspects such as locating polling stations and understanding poll schedules, while encouraging higher turnout, especially among youth, women, urban voters and persons with disabilities.

The campaign also integrates the rich cultural heritage of West Bengal, including traditional art forms such as Kalighat painting, Pattachitra, Chhau dance, Jatra theatre and Baul music, to make voter awareness more relatable and engaging.

The ECI said the drive will also highlight recent voter-friendly measures, including mobile deposit facilities outside polling stations, the ECINET mobile application, 100 per cent webcasting and improved voter information slips to enhance transparency and ease of voting.

Electoral Literacy Clubs across colleges and universities will play a key role in mobilising young voters, supported by a targeted social media campaign and collaborations with government departments and corporate organisations.

The Commission reiterated that these initiatives are designed to ensure fear-free, inducement-free and informed participation, reinforcing the spirit of democratic engagement as states gear up for the upcoming Assembly elections.
