Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasized India’s commitment to tackling ethical challenges in artificial intelligence (AI) and combating fake news on social media.
Addressing the Parliament, he called for robust debates and responsible innovation to address these global concerns, while proposing accountability measures for social media platforms.
He stressed the need for a balanced approach, saying, “Freedom of speech and accountability must coexist. If society and this House agree, we can work towards framing a new law to ensure responsible communication in the digital age.”
Vaishnaw also addressed concerns about privacy and AI governance, highlighting the government’s proactive steps to develop indigenous technologies under the ‘India AI Mission.’
“To address the emerging landscape of AI, we have initiated eight projects aimed at creating tools and technologies within the country,” he added.
Highlighting India’s global leadership in AI, the minister said that the country is one of the leading ones in shaping global thought on AI governance.
“India’s voice continues to hold weight in shaping global thought on AI governance,” he said, adding that the tools developed under the ‘India AI Mission’ will help ensure the country stays at the forefront of responsible AI innovation.
