EU and India hold 15th joint working group on counter-terrorism in Brussels

The European Union and India held their 15th Meeting of the Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism (CT) on Wednesday in Brussels.

The dialogue was co-chaired by Maciej Stadejek, Director for Security and Defence Policy at the European External Action Service, and KD Dewal, Joint Secretary (Counter-Terrorism) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the MEA stated.

Both sides condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, with the EU expressing condolences to India for the loss of innocent lives. The two parties reiterated their strong condemnation of terrorism in all forms, including cross-border terrorism.

The meeting highlighted that terrorism is a global phenomenon requiring sustained and comprehensive action. Both India and the EU stressed the importance of cooperation in multilateral forums such as the United Nations, the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

The dialogue also facilitated discussions on domestic, regional, and global threat assessments. Participants noted that instability and conflicts worldwide can act as catalysts for terrorism and violent extremism.

Key topics discussed included measures to counter the financing of terrorism, prevent online radicalisation, exchange information on the designation of terrorists and entities, and address emerging technologies impacting security.

Both sides explored ways to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation and identified areas for future collaboration. The next meeting of the Joint Working Group is scheduled to take place in New Delhi on a mutually convenient date.

Ambassador Herve Delphin of the EU Delegation to India tweeted, “The EU and India standing and working together in addressing the scourge of Terrorism. Fruitful meeting in Brussels on the occasion of the 15th EU-India Counter Terrorism Dialogue.”
