EU says Montenegro is most advanced country to join the bloc

European Union enlargement is a “realistic possibility” in the coming years and Montenegro is the most advanced candidate to join the bloc, European Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said on Tuesday.

Previewing the EU’s annual enlargement report, Kos told the European parliament that Montenegro, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine have all made significant advances this year in the path toward EU membership.

“We must prepare our union for a larger EU,” she said, adding that given the pace of some candidate countries a successful enlargement is “a realistic possibility within the coming years”.
