Tennis great Roger Federer is set to make an emotional return to the US Open later this year, seven years after his last appearance at Flushing Meadows, with organisers announcing that he will headline a special exhibition event in New York.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion will feature in “Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York” on August 25, bringing one of the sport’s most celebrated figures back to a venue that played host to some of the finest moments of his career.
Federer, who retired in 2022 after a remarkable 24-year professional career, remains the only man to have won five consecutive US Open singles titles, achieving the feat between 2004 and 2008. His return is expected to be among the marquee attractions of this year’s tournament festivities.
Reflecting on his bond with the tournament, Federer said the US Open holds a special place in his heart.
“The US Open has always been one of the most special tournaments for me. So many unforgettable moments of my career happened in New York, and Arthur Ashe Stadium is a place that means a great deal to me. I have missed being part of that atmosphere and feeling the incredible energy that the fans bring every year,” Federer said.
Joining the Swiss icon at the exhibition will be fellow tennis legends, including Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe.
Federer’s last US Open appearance came in 2021, when he was defeated by Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals. He finished his illustrious career with 20 Grand Slam titles and 103 ATP singles trophies before bidding farewell at the Laver Cup in London in 2022.
