Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared concerns over recent developments in Bangladesh with US President Donald Trump during their meeting at the White House.
Addressing a press briefing after the meeting, the foreign secretary confirmed that the issue was discussed between the two leaders and expressed hope for stable and constructive relations between India and Bangladesh.
“This was a subject that was discussed between the two leaders. The Prime Minister shared his views and, indeed, his concerns regarding recent developments in Bangladesh and how India perceives the situation. We hope that the situation in Bangladesh will move forward in a direction that allows us to maintain constructive and stable relations. However, there are concerns about the situation, and the Prime Minister conveyed those views to President Trump,” Misri said in response to a reporter’s question.
Earlier, during his remarks at the White House after the meeting, President Trump said that the situation in Bangladesh was not related to the US “deep state,” emphasizing that he would leave the matter to Prime Minister Modi.
“There was no role for our deep state… This is something the Prime Minister has been working on for a long time. Frankly, I’ve been reading about it, and I will leave Bangladesh to the Prime Minister,” Trump said.
In August 2024, a student-led movement ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after weeks of protests and violence that resulted in over 600 deaths. Hasina, 76, fled to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was subsequently formed.
Misri visited Bangladesh in December last year, during which India and Bangladesh agreed to maintain “good working relations.”
