Foreign Secretary Misri meets Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri concluded a one-day visit to Dhaka, meeting Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, and addressing India’s concerns regarding the safety of minorities. Misri also met with Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, and Jashim Uddin, the Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, during his visit.

The discussions focused on maintaining stability and fostering cooperation between the two countries. Misri reiterated India’s commitment to a democratic, peaceful, and inclusive Bangladesh, expressing interest in building relations based on mutual respect and trust. He also highlighted India’s ongoing collaboration in areas such as trade, energy, connectivity, and capacity building to support the people of Bangladesh.

India raised concerns about recent attacks on cultural and diplomatic sites and emphasized the importance of safeguarding minority communities. Both sides engaged in comprehensive talks covering political and security issues, border management, trade, and regional cooperation under the BIMSTEC framework.

This visit follows earlier high-level interactions after political changes in Bangladesh in August 2024. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first world leader to congratulate Muhammad Yunus on his new role and invited him to participate in the Third Voice of Global South Summit. The visit also builds on recent engagements, such as a meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Touhid Hossain at the UN General Assembly in September.

The Indian Foreign Secretary’s visit is seen as a continuation of high-level engagements, following earlier meetings between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Bangladeshi Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain. Both nations reaffirmed their dedication to fostering stability, economic growth, and cultural exchange.
