Former Karnataka CM SM Krishna passes away at 92, PM Modi condoles his death

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister SM Krishna passed away on Tuesday at his residence in Sadashivanagar, Bengaluru, at the age of 92. Krishna had been unwell for some time and was hospitalised earlier in August due to a prolonged illness.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Krishna’s death, remembering him as a “remarkable leader” admired across social strata. In a post on X, Modi said: “SM Krishna was a remarkable leader, admired by people from all walks of life. He always worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others. He is fondly remembered for his tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister, particularly for his focus on infrastructural development. SM Krishna was also a prolific reader and thinker.”

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also expressed deep sorrow over Krishna’s demise, highlighting his contributions to the state’s growth in the IT and biotechnology (BT) sectors. Taking to X, Siddaramaiah said: “I am shocked by the death of former Chief Minister SM Krishna. Krishna’s service as a State and Union Minister and Chief Minister is unparalleled. Karnataka will always be indebted to him for his contribution to the growth of the IT-BT sector, especially as Chief Minister.”

The Karnataka government has declared three days of mourning, from December 10 to December 12, in honour of the late leader. “His last rites will be performed with full state honours. No functions or celebrations will be held during this period,” an official statement said.

The mortal remains of SM Krishna have been kept at his residence in Bengaluru to allow the public to pay their last respects.
