Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat represented India at the World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development (MONDIACULT 2025), organized by UNESCO in Barcelona, Spain, on Monday. The event brought together ministers and cultural leaders from across the globe to chart the future of international cultural cooperation.
In a significant recognition of India’s role, Shekhawat served as Chair of the Asia-Pacific Group during the Ministerial Plenary Session, which oversaw the adoption of the Rules of Procedure, Agenda, and election of office bearers. Officials said this reflected India’s growing leadership in advancing cultural diplomacy and regional cooperation.
At the Opening Ceremony, delegates witnessed vibrant cultural performances, followed by addresses from UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and the President of Spain, who stressed the importance of culture as a unifying force in global development.
Speaking at the Ministerial Plenary, Shekhawat underscored India’s belief in culture as a global public good and a key driver of sustainable development. He also addressed a thematic session on cultural rights and the economy of culture, where he highlighted India’s initiatives to strengthen the creative economy and promote inclusive growth.
On the sidelines of the conference, Shekhawat held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Spain, Iran, Norway, Colombia, and Greece. Discussions focused on collaboration in heritage conservation, museums, performing arts, and creative industries.
India’s active participation at MONDIACULT 2025, officials noted, reaffirms the country’s commitment to global cultural dialogue and its vision of positioning culture as a cornerstone of sustainable and inclusive development.
