German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday and conveyed his appreciation for India’s consistent call for an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
The visiting minister noted that India and Germany have been expanding their strategic partnership across sectors, particularly in security and defence, economy and trade, and skilled labour mobility.
“Had great talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. Our countries have taken good steps to expand our strategic partnership across the board. We also greatly appreciate India’s call for a ceasefire in Ukraine,” Wadephul posted on X after the meeting.
Earlier, Wadephul held talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House. The two leaders discussed closer cooperation in digital technology, semiconductors, talent mobility, and critical technologies. Dr. Jaishankar also acknowledged Germany’s strong support for advancing India–EU ties and its proactive efforts towards the conclusion of the Free Trade Agreement.
The discussions also covered global issues, including the Ukraine conflict, developments in West Asia, and the Indo-Pacific.
Wadephul, who arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday after engagements in Bengaluru, described India as a “key strategic partner” for Germany. He highlighted Bengaluru as the “turbine of this economic powerhouse,” citing its role in technology and innovation.
During his Bengaluru visit, the German Foreign Minister inaugurated the new Experience Centre at the SAP campus, visited the Mercedes-Benz development centre, and held interactions at ISRO and the Indian Institute of Science. He underlined India’s growing investment in high-tech research and the scope for deeper Indo-German cooperation.
He also pointed out the increasing interest of Indian professionals and students in Germany, noting that over 64,000 visa applications were filed in Bengaluru alone in 2024.
