German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Tuesday began a two-day official visit to India, underscoring the growing strategic importance of Indo-German relations.
Wadephul, who arrived in Bengaluru in the morning, will visit the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters before travelling to New Delhi later in the day for high-level engagements on Wednesday.
This is Wadephul’s first visit to India in his current capacity. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit highlights the strong and evolving ties between the two democracies.
Calling India a “key partner in the Indo-Pacific,” Wadephul said, “India and Germany enjoy close ties, politically, economically and culturally. There is significant potential to expand our strategic partnership, from security cooperation to technology and innovation, as well as the recruitment of skilled workers.”
The German minister also stressed the importance of shared democratic values. “India’s voice, as the world’s most populous country and largest democracy, is increasingly influential on global platforms,” he noted.
Wadephul is scheduled to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on a range of issues, including trade, security, green energy, digital transformation and global governance.
In May 2025, Jaishankar visited Berlin and held extensive discussions with Wadephul on the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation.
