Golf: Kapil Dev-Grant Thornton Invitational to tee off from April 23 with new mixed format

The third edition of the Kapil Dev-Grant Thornton Invitational is set to begin at Prestige Golfshire, Bengaluru, from April 23 to 26, introducing an innovative mixed format that aims to redefine the Indian golf scene.

India’s first professional golf tournament to be co-sanctioned by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), the event offers a prize purse of Rs.2 crores.

This unique tournament blends a Professional Championship with a Pro-Am component, fostering collaboration between professionals and amateurs. The event kicks off with a practice round on April 23, followed by a three-day, 72-hole championship from April 24 to 26, where 60 male and 12 female professionals will compete.

In addition to the championship, the event will feature three Pro-Am rounds in a rotational format. During these rounds, 48 professionals will tee off in the morning while 24 others pair with 72 amateurs in the afternoon session. Each Pro-Am team will consist of one professional and three amateurs, with scores combining the pro’s stroke play and the amateurs’ scramble format. Prize money will be awarded to the top three professionals in the Pro-Am standings.

Kapil Dev, PGTI president and Indian cricket legend, expressed excitement about the tournament’s growth. “With the third edition of the Kapil Dev-Grant Thornton Invitational, we’re raising the bar even higher. This year’s event promises to be the most unforgettable yet. I extend my gratitude to Grant Thornton Bharat for their support in promoting golf in India and to Prestige Golfshire, Bengaluru. Golf in India is a platform for inclusivity, diversity, and excellence. Through this tournament, we hope to inspire a broader audience, nurture the next generation of golfers, and make the sport more accessible for all.”

Amandeep Johl, CEO of PGTI, added, “The inclusion of leading Indian women professionals through our partnership with WGAI adds a new dimension to the event, emphasizing inclusivity in sport. With its new venue and the presence of top female professionals, this year’s tournament promises a unique and memorable experience for both players and fans alike.”
