Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that the government has officially approved the creation of the first all-women battalion within the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
In a post on X, Shah highlighted this as a significant step in realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to increase women’s participation in nation-building.
“In a firm step towards realizing Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of enhancing women’s participation in every field of nation-building, the Modi government has approved the establishment of the first all-women battalion of the CISF. To be raised as an elite troop, the Mahila Battalion will shoulder the responsibility of protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure, like airports and metro rails, and providing VIP security as commandos. This decision will undoubtedly inspire more women to contribute to the vital task of safeguarding the nation”, he said.
The CISF, known for its role in securing important national infrastructure, has long been a preferred choice for women aspiring to serve in the Central Armed Police Force. Currently, women represent over 7% of the force, and the creation of the Mahila Battalion is expected to further encourage young women across India to join CISF and take up roles in critical national security operations.
Preparations for the new battalion have already begun, with the CISF Headquarters focusing on recruitment, training, and identifying a suitable location for the battalion’s headquarters. The specialized training program for the Mahila Battalion is being designed to ensure the force’s readiness in performing diverse roles, including VIP security and safeguarding sensitive infrastructure like airports and the Delhi Metro Rail.
The idea for an all-women battalion within the CISF was initiated following the direction of Shah during the 53rd CISF Day celebrations. This move is seen as a landmark decision that will not only empower women within the security forces but also pave the way for greater gender inclusivity in critical roles traditionally dominated by men.
