Govt forms committee for Repairability Index in electronics

The Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) has established a committee of experts to create a framework for a Repairability Index in the mobile and electronics sector.

This move follows the National Workshop on the Right to Repair in the Mobile and Electronics Sector, held on August 29, 2024. During the workshop, industry stakeholders discussed the need for a repairability framework to extend product lifespans and improve access to repair information and spare parts, including those for discontinued models.

The Repairability Index will provide consumers with information on the ease of repairing different products, helping them make more informed decisions. Standardizing repairability assessments will enable consumers to compare products based on how easily they can be repaired, encouraging a more mindful and sustainable approach to product use.

The proposed repair ecosystem will include several important components:

Comprehensive Repair Information: Consumers will have access to repair manuals, diagnostic tools, and lists of necessary tools and parts.

Spare Parts Availability: Easier identification and timely availability of spare parts.

Affordable Tools: Cost-effective tools that are safe and easily accessible to consumers.

Modular Design: Products will feature components that can be independently accessed for easier repairs.

Economic Feasibility: The cost of parts and labor will be kept affordable for consumers.

The committee will develop policies, guidelines, and regulations to support the Repairability Index and integrate it into existing consumer protection frameworks.

The committee is expected to submit its report, along with the proposed framework for the Repairability Index, by November 15, 2024.
