The government has set a target of increasing the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country to 25,000 by March 2027 to further expand access to quality generic medicines at affordable prices, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers informed Parliament.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, a total of 17,610 Jan Aushadhi Kendras were operational across India as of November 30, 2025, a sharp rise from just 80 stores in 2014. The steady expansion reflects growing public awareness and confidence in Jan Aushadhi medicines, along with improved viability of the outlets.
The government said the increasing demand for affordable generic medicines has led to a significant rise in sales and product offerings under the scheme. During the last financial year, the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras increased by 37 per cent, while the maximum retail price value of sales under the scheme rose by 38 per cent, indicating strong growth momentum.
Jan Aushadhi Kendras are opened through applications invited from individual entrepreneurs, non-governmental organisations, societies, trusts, firms and private companies. Applications are submitted online through the official Janaushadhi portal, enabling participation from across the country, including states such as Andhra Pradesh.
The scheme aims to ensure the availability of high-quality medicines at affordable prices, reduce out-of-pocket expenditure on healthcare, and encourage entrepreneurship by making the operation of Jan Aushadhi Kendras financially attractive.
