Union Minister of Culture, Tourism & Development of North Eastern Region, G. Kishan Reddy, expressed his delight in a post on X, attributing this achievement to the unwavering efforts of the government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in showcasing India's cultural heritage to the world.
The Evaluation Body of the 2003 Convention applauded India for submitting an outstanding dossier with comprehensive supporting material. The report acknowledged Garba as an element that champions unity in diversity, contributing to social equality across communities. UNESCO's recognition is expected to elevate Garba's global visibility, preserving its authentic essence.
Several member states congratulated India on this remarkable achievement. To commemorate the occasion, a troupe of eight dancers from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations showcased the Garba dance form at the meeting venue. Back in Gujarat, the state government is organizing curated 'Garba' events across districts to celebrate this historic milestone.
The UNESCO 2003 Convention's Listing mechanism aims to enhance the visibility of intangible cultural heritage, promote awareness of its significance, and encourage dialogue that respects cultural diversity. India's election to the 24-member Inter-governmental Committee (IGC) of the ICH 2003 Convention in 2022 for a four-year tenure further underscores the country's commitment to safeguarding and promoting its rich cultural legacy on the global stage.
