Heart attacks and heart failure surge in winter, warns Dr. Tarun Sahni

With the onset of winter, cases of heart attacks and heart failure are on the rise, warns Dr. Tarun Sahni, a general physician and internal medicine specialist at Apollo Hospital in Delhi.

Dr. Sahni explained that cold temperatures cause blood vessels in the extremities to contract, leading to increased blood pressure. This heightened pressure strains the heart and can also affect vulnerable areas of the brain, increasing the risk of strokes.

“In winter, the blood vessels in the periphery contract due to the cold, causing blood pressure to rise,” said Dr. Sahni. “This elevated pressure can damage vulnerable areas in the brain, leading to strokes. Similarly, the heart has to pump harder through the narrowed vessels, increasing the risk of heart attacks and heart failure.”

He also advised individuals with lung conditions to exercise caution when going outdoors, recommending daytime activities when sunlight is present, and pollution levels are relatively lower. Dr. Sahni emphasized the importance of minimizing exposure to both cold and pollution, especially for those with pre-existing health issues.

“We advise patients with lung diseases to step out during the day when the sun is out and pollution levels are lower. Exercise and precautions should be taken to avoid cold exposure and pollution,” he said.
