Heatwave conditions eased across parts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday as widespread rainfall brought relief from soaring temperatures, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rain alert for several districts over the next two days.
According to the IMD, atmospheric circulations over southern India are influencing weather conditions and are likely to trigger continued rainfall across the state in the coming days.
Weather officials said one atmospheric circulation persists over the Kanyakumari Sea and adjoining areas, while another has formed over northeast Tamil Nadu and nearby regions. The systems resulted in widespread rainfall across multiple districts on Sunday.
In Krishnagiri district, moderate rainfall was recorded in Hosur and surrounding areas, including Madagiri, Jujuvadi, Begepalli and Bagalur.
Sivaganga and nearby localities witnessed heavy rain accompanied by strong winds for over an hour, leading to a significant drop in temperature.
In Dindigul district, Palani and Kodaikanal received nearly two hours of rainfall, causing waterlogging on several roads. Periyakulam and adjoining areas in Theni district also experienced moderate showers for more than 30 minutes.
Thunderstorms and steady rain were reported in several parts of Pudukkottai district, including the new bus stand area, Thiruvappur, Machuvadi, Thirukokarnam, Bose Nagar, Mettupatti and Malayedu.
Heavy rain accompanied by thunder was also reported in parts of Madurai district, including Pandian Nagar, Vadakarai, Chengulam, Karisalpatti and Maravankulam around Thirumangalam.
Nagapattinam district received substantial rainfall in areas such as Sikkal, Velankanni, Kilvelur, Valivalam and Thirukkuvalai, resulting in waterlogging in low-lying localities.
The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall on Monday in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai and Sivaganga districts.
Strong winds accompanied by heavy rain are also likely in Pudukkottai, Karur, Tiruchy, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.
The weather department further said heavy rainfall is expected to continue on Tuesday in the hilly areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts, as well as in Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts. Chennai may witness moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in isolated areas.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to make its onset over Kerala around May 26.
