Recent weather patterns associated with a deep circulation in the Gulf of Mannar are expected to result in heavy rainfall across Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu, according to IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy, who spoke on Friday.
“Yesterday, Tamil Nadu recorded 11 cm of rainfall, while Kerala experienced 6-7 cm and coastal Karnataka saw 9 cm,” Sen Roy reported. “Heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging from 12 to 20 cm, is expected in interior Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu due to this deep circulation.”
Sen Roy added that weather conditions across the rest of the country will remain clear. “Strong winds will persist in North India for the next 2-3 days, with no change in temperatures expected until November 3. After this date, temperatures are likely to drop by 2-3 degrees Celsius due to north-westerly winds,” she stated.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of very heavy rainfall likely over Kerala and Mahe, as well as Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, specifically on Friday.
The IMD’s regional weather forecasting center noted that there could be localized waterlogging, which may disrupt traffic and cause minor damage to loose structures. In light of the impending weather, the IMD has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid travel if possible. Parents and pet owners are urged to ensure that children and animals are kept indoors and to remove any loose timber or debris that could pose safety risks.
For those who must venture outdoors, the IMD recommends avoiding metal structures and objects that can conduct electricity, as well as steering clear of utility lines, including power and telephone lines, metal fences, and trees.
Individuals are also advised to stay away from electrical conductors, windows, and doors, and to refrain from using corded phones and other electrical equipment that could conduct lightning.
The IMD has issued a seven-day weather warning, indicating that “heavy to very heavy rainfall is highly likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, including Mahe, on November 1, with a slight decrease expected thereafter. A gradual drop in minimum and maximum temperatures over North and East India by 2-3 degrees is forecasted between November 3 and 7.”
