Several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur, are likely to receive rainfall on Sunday, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre.
Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kilometres per hour is likely at isolated places in 15 districts on Sunday and Monday.
The districts include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Krishnagiri, Salem, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli and Madurai. Puducherry may also experience similar weather conditions.
The weather system is being influenced by a north-south trough extending from coastal Andhra Pradesh to the Gulf of Mannar and passing through parts of Tamil Nadu at around 0.9 kilometre above sea level.
Moderate thunderstorms are also expected over other Western Ghats districts as well as Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Sivaganga, Erode, Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karur, Pudukkottai and Nagapattinam, besides Karaikal.
Light thundershowers may occur at several other places across the state.
On September 22, isolated parts of the Western Ghats and several coastal and interior districts, including Chennai and Madurai, may receive moderate to heavy rainfall. Gusty winds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are also likely.
From September 23 to 25, light to moderate rainfall is expected over the Western Ghats and northern coastal districts.
In Chennai and its suburbs, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy, with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms likely at a few places during the evening or night.
The maximum temperature in Chennai is likely to remain between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may range between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea in the notified areas.
Squally winds of 45 to 55 kilometres per hour, occasionally reaching 65 kilometres per hour, are forecast over the Gulf of Mannar, adjoining Comorin area and the southern Tamil Nadu coast on Monday.
Winds may strengthen further over parts of the Bay of Bengal on September 22 and 23, reaching 50 to 60 kilometres per hour and occasionally touching 70 kilometres per hour.
