Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday remembered Veer Savarkar on his birth anniversary and said that his courage and patriotism will always inspire people.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi said, “Remembering Veer Savarkar on his Jayanti. His courage and patriotism will always inspire people. His intellect and emphasis on social reform are also noteworthy.”
PM Modi also shared a video in which he said, “Today, May 28, marks the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. His sacrifice, courage, and determination continue to inspire us. Savarkar’s personality was full of unique qualities. He was a worshipper of both weapons and scriptures. He was also a powerful poet and social reformer who emphasised harmony and unity.”
“I cannot forget the day when I visited the jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands where Veer Savarkar served his Kalapani sentence. Veer Savarkar’s personality was strong and expansive. His fearless and self-respecting nature did not conform to the mentality of slavery. I remember all that he did for the country,” he added.
Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Veer Savarkar.
In a post on X, HM Shah said, “On the birth anniversary of Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar ji, I offer him countless salutations. The fearless warrior of the freedom struggle, Veer Savarkar ji, dedicated his entire life to the service of the motherland.”
“From his life and writings, we learn what unwavering devotion to the nation and ideology truly means. “O Motherland! Life without you is akin to death.” This statement of his reflects the boundless love he held for the nation,” said HM Shah.
“Savarkar ji, who staunchly opposed social evils like untouchability and united the people of the country, his life will continue to guide us all for ages to come,” he added.
Born on May 28, 1883, Veer Savarkar is remembered as a prominent figure in India’s freedom movement. He was widely known for his role as a revolutionary, poet, writer and social reformer who inspired resistance against British colonial rule in the early 20th century.
Savarkar founded revolutionary organisations aimed at mobilising Indian youth in the fight for independence. His imprisonment at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands remains one of the most significant chapters of his life, symbolising resilience and unwavering commitment to the nation.
Apart from his contribution to the freedom struggle, Savarkar also advocated social reforms, rationalism and modernisation. He consistently spoke against social evils and promoted the idea of a progressive and self-reliant India.
The portrait of Swatantryaveer V.D. Savarkar installed in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan was painted by Chandrakala Kumar Kadam and was unveiled on February 26, 2003, by former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
