‘His performances have captivated generations’: PM Modi wishes Rajinikanth on his 75th birthday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings to Rajinikanth on his 75th birthday. PM Modi hailed the actor’s five-decade cinematic journey, calling it an extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Greetings to Thiru Rajinikanth Ji on the special occasion of his 75th birthday. His performances have captivated generations and have earned extensive admiration. His body of work spans diverse roles and genres, consistently setting benchmarks. This year has been notable because he completed 50 years in the world of films. Praying for his long and healthy life.”

The tribute marked Rajinikanth’s completion of 50 illustrious years in films – a milestone celebrated widely this year, including at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where he received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also shared a heartfelt note on X, praising Rajinikanth’s enduring charisma and decades-long influence.

“Rajinikanth = Charisma that conquers age! … From six to sixty, captivating for half a century – my friend Superstar Rajinikanth, heartfelt birthday wishes! May his victory flag keep flying with the love of the people!” said Stalin.

Wishes poured in from political leaders, film personalities and fans across the world, celebrating the actor affectionately known as “Thalaiva”.

Born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad on December 12, 1950, Rajinikanth’s rise from a bus conductor in Bengaluru to one of Asia’s most influential entertainers remains one of cinema’s most inspiring journeys.

He made his debut with Apoorva Raagangal (1975), after which his career skyrocketed with memorable performances in films such as Moondru Mudichu, Mullum Malarum, Billa, Moondru Mugam, and Padikkadavan. His unique style – cigarette flips, punch dialogues and unmatched screen presence—turned him into a cultural phenomenon by the early 1980s.

The 1990s cemented his superstar status with films like Annamalai, Baashha, Muthu and Padayappa. Muthu famously became a major success in Japan, earning Rajinikanth a global fan base.

The 2000s and 2010s saw him headline blockbusters such as Chandramukhi, Sivaji, Enthiran, and 2.0, each setting new technical and commercial standards in Indian cinema.

Beyond films, Rajinikanth is admired for his simplicity, spiritual outlook and deep connection with his fans. His contributions have been honoured with the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, among numerous other accolades.
