“Historic moment in Marseille,” PM Modi says as he inaugurates Indian Consulate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron jointly inaugurated the Indian Consulate in Marseille on Wednesday, marking what PM Modi described as a “historic moment” in India-France relations.

Reflecting on Marseille’s deep historical ties with India, PM Modi recalled that the city served as an important base for Indian troops during the First World War and has a significant connection to freedom fighter Veer Savarkar.

“A historic moment in Marseille! President Emmanuel Macron and I inaugurated the Indian Consulate in this vibrant city, marking a new chapter in India-France ties. This consulate will serve as an important bridge, strengthening our cultural, economic, and people-to-people connections,” PM Modi posted on X. He also expressed gratitude to the French government and congratulated the Indian diaspora on the occasion.

Ahead of the inauguration, the leaders were welcomed with the beats of traditional Indian dhols. Both PM Modi and President Macron also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, who celebrated the opening of the new diplomatic mission.

“The Indian community is very enthusiastic about a new consulate in Marseille,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and President Macron paid homage to soldiers who fought in the World Wars at the Mazargues War Cemetery.

“At Mazargues War Cemetery, President Macron and I paid homage to the soldiers who fought in the World Wars, including several Indian soldiers who valiantly displayed utmost grit. They answered the call of duty with unwavering courage, shedding their blood in the hope of a better and more peaceful world. Their heroism will be remembered for generations to come,” PM Modi said.

President Macron also paid tribute to the sacrifices of Indian soldiers, acknowledging their vital role in France’s history.

“More than 100,000 Indians fought for France in 1914. Ten thousand never returned. They set foot on the soil of Marseille before fighting in the mud of the trenches, unaware that they were marching to their deaths. Their sacrifice binds France and India forever,” Macron posted on X.
