President Donald Trump said he’s hopeful that Russia and Ukraine could reach a peace agreement this week to end the ongoing war.
Posting on his platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, Trump said that if the two countries strike a deal, both could benefit economically by doing business with the United States.
“Hopefully Russia and Ukraine will make a deal this week. Both will then start to do big business with the United States of America, which is thriving, and make a fortune,” Trump said.
According to a CNN report on Friday, the U.S. is considering recognizing Russian control over Crimea as part of the potential peace deal. The proposed agreement also includes an immediate ceasefire between the two nations. The plan was shared with Ukrainian and European officials during a meeting in Paris on Thursday.
However, parts of the proposal still need to be finalized. The U.S. is expected to continue working with Ukraine and European partners on the details next week in London.
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 after a military invasion—an action widely condemned by the international community as illegal.
Trump also hinted that the U.S. may step back from peace negotiations if talks become too difficult.
“If, for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say, ‘You’re foolish, you’re horrible people,’ and we’re going to take a pass,” he said.
Still, he remains cautiously optimistic.
“I think we have a really good chance of getting it done. It’s coming to a head right now,” Trump added.
