IFFI 2024: A global celebration of cinema and young Talent

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), is preparing for the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held in Goa from November 20 to 28. The festival promises a vibrant celebration of global cinema, with a particular focus on emerging talent and the art of storytelling.

The theme of IFFI 2024, “Young Filmmakers – The Future is Now,” reflects the importance of youth in shaping the future of cinema. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan, praised the festival’s growing international stature, likening it to renowned global festivals such as Cannes. He highlighted the overwhelming response IFFI 2024 received for international film submissions, underscoring the festival’s expanding global impact.

Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, spoke about the festival’s design to showcase emerging voices in film, especially young filmmakers. This year, the “Creative Minds of Tomorrow” initiative has been expanded to support 100 young talents, up from 75 in previous editions. Additionally, a new award for Best Indian Debut Director has been introduced to recognize young filmmakers across the country.

Shekhar Kapur, the Festival Director, emphasized the timeless craft of storytelling as the cornerstone of cinema. He highlighted the importance of preserving this art form in an ever-evolving world. Meanwhile, Prasoon Joshi, Chairman of the CBFC, referred to India as a “country of restless dreams” and emphasized the festival’s role in bringing these dreams to the global stage.

In a historic move, IFFI 2024 will be the first edition led by the film industry itself, with filmmakers at the helm of organizing and curating the festival. This approach is designed to further strengthen the festival’s ties with the global film community.

The 55th edition of IFFI is set to present over 180 international films, including world premieres, international premieres, and numerous Asian and Indian premieres. With a record number of submissions—1,676 from 101 countries—the festival promises to deliver a diverse and engaging cinematic experience. Australia will be the Country of Focus at IFFI 2024, with a dedicated package of Australian films and industry participation. The opening film, Better Man by Michael Gracey, will offer a captivating glimpse into the life of pop star Robbie Williams.

IFFI 2024 will also present the prestigious Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award to Australian director Philip Noyce, whose work has had a lasting impact on global cinema. The festival’s competition sections will feature 15 films vying for the Golden Peacock, while a new section for Best Debut Indian Director will highlight fresh voices from India’s burgeoning film scene.

The Indian Panorama section will showcase the country’s cinematic diversity, with 25 feature films and 20 non-feature films. Additionally, IFFI will pay tribute to Indian cinema legends like Raj Kapoor, Mohammed Rafi, Tapan Sinha, and Akkineni Nageswara Rao with screenings of restored classics, special performances, and exhibitions. This year’s festival will also feature new international programming sections, including Rising Stars, Mission Life (eco-conscious cinema), and a special package dedicated to Australia.

For the first time in its history, IFFI will be fully accessible to individuals with disabilities, ensuring that the festival is inclusive for all attendees. This year’s event will also feature the “IFFIesta” cultural extravaganza, which will bring together films, music, dance, food, and art in a lively celebration of cinema and creativity.

Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest film market, will run alongside IFFI, offering a platform for filmmakers and industry professionals to network, pitch projects, and collaborate. The event will showcase over 350 film projects and host a series of workshops and pitching sessions on film production and international collaboration.

With an impressive lineup of films, masterclasses, industry panels, and cultural celebrations, IFFI 2024 promises to be a landmark edition, bringing together cinephiles, filmmakers, and industry leaders from around the world. For more details and to register, visit the official IFFI website.
